ASPELL Jane

Jane ASPELL is a cognitive neuroscientist and is currently Associate Professor and Head of the Self and Body Lab at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU), in Cambridge, UK. Before joining ARU in 2011, Jane did postdoctoral research at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland, at Goldsmiths College in London, and at the University of Oxford. She completed her PhD in Neuroscience at the University of Newcastle, and for her undergraduate studies, she read Biological Sciences at Somerville College, University of Oxford.

Jane’s research aims to investigate questions including: What is a Self? How does our brain generate the conscious experiencer of our lives? What is the relation between the physical self - the body - and the mental self? Her lab aims to tackle these thorny questions lying at the intersection of neuroscience, psychology and philosophy. They do this by creating 'out of body' illusions using video-based virtual reality setups, by measuring the integration of external and internal bodily signals, and by testing neurotypical participants, and participants with autism, chronic pain and depersonalisation. Her lab’s research probes both outside- and inside-bodily experience to investigate the brain bases of bodily self-consciousness.

Jane ASPELL è una neuroscienziata cognitiva ed è attualmente professoressa associata e direttrice del Self and Body Lab presso l'Anglia Ruskin University (ARU), a Cambridge, nel Regno Unito. Prima di unirsi all'ARU nel 2011, Jane ha svolto ricerca post-dottorato presso l'École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Svizzera, al Goldsmiths College di Londra e all'Università di Oxford. Ha completato il dottorato in Neuroscienze presso l'Università di Newcastle e, per i suoi studi universitari, ha studiato Scienze Biologiche al Somerville College, Università di Oxford.

La ricerca di Jane mira a indagare domande tra cui: cos’è un sé? In che modo il nostro cervello genera lo sperimentatore cosciente della nostra vita? Qual è la relazione tra il sé fisico – il corpo – e il sé mentale? Il suo laboratorio mira ad affrontare queste questioni spinose che si trovano all’intersezione tra neuroscienze, psicologia e filosofia. Lo fanno creando illusioni "fuori dal corpo" utilizzando configurazioni di realtà virtuale basate su video, misurando l'integrazione di segnali corporei esterni ed interni e testando partecipanti neurotipici e partecipanti con autismo, dolore cronico e depersonalizzazione. La ricerca del suo laboratorio indaga sia l’esperienza esterna che quella interna del corpo per indagare le basi cerebrali dell’autocoscienza corporea.
